Fletcher Roger Nichols was born in Hamilton Township in Mercer County, New Jersey to the late Reverend Doctor Rutherford V. Nichols and the later Josephine Virginia Colvin Nichols on January 4, 1927. He was the fifth child of a family of seven children. He departed this life on Friday, December 14, 2018 while surrounded by family. Fletcher was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church for many years and was baptized at a young age under the pastorate of his late father. He was a member and then a trustee for the Brotherhood Breakfast Association of Chester, PA for over 40 years. In his later years, he joined Faith Temple Baptist Church, his final church home. Fletcher received his education at Glassboro High School in Glassboro, New Jersey, where he was the quarterback for the football team. He later joined the United States Army where he was ranked as a Corporal with the specialty classification of Engineer Equipment Mechanic. He received the Royal Order of Blue Nose Award, an honor given to those that were in Greenland above the Arctic Circle. He later received an Honorable Discharge. He worked at the Sun Oil Refinery in Marcus Hook, PA where he started out as a truck driver and then came off the road to preform numerous duties that led up to him being promoted to the position of First Black Foreman. He was employed with Sun Oil for over 40 years. Fletcher followed in the footsteps of his father and older brother Colvin and became a member of the Master Mason at Green Mountain Lodge Prince Hall Affiliate in Glassboro, New Jersey. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was preceded in death by brothers, Edward V. Nichols and R. Colvin Nichols; brother-in-law, Carlyle Franklin, Sr., sisters, Miriam N. Franklin, Lillian J. Nichols, Sara M. Nichols, Virginia Frieson and nephews, Barry J. Banks and Derek L. Shepherd. Fletcher is survived by his wife Virginia, 1 son - Christopher Nichols, 3 daughters - Madeline (Edward, Sr.) Devine, Marion Carter, and Marcella Carter; 1 sister in law - Jacquelyn Shepherd, 3 grandchildren, Adoree Devine, Edward Devine He. and Ayrel Funderburk, 1 great grandson - Wesly Redfearn III, his beloved cousin Katherine Collins , and a host of nephews , nieces, cousins, and friends.
