Obituary of James Lloyd Scott, Jr.

God, in his infinite wisdom and compassion, received unto Himself our beloved

James Lloyd Scott, Jr. on Sunday, January 28, 2018.  Born to the late James L. Scott, Sr. and Rosella (Long) Scott on July 29, 1929 in Norfolk, Virginia, Lloyd, affectionately known as “Bub” is the eldest of five siblings; Geraldine Baynard, Yvonne Burroughs, Theodore R. Scott, Sr., and Jamie Scott.

Lloyd spent his childhood in Boykins, Virginia, before moving to Palmyra, New Jersey with his family in 1942.  He graduated from Palmyra High School, Class of 1947, where he excelled in football, and was class treasurer. Upon graduation, James enlisted in the Army, achieving the rank of Corporal upon honorable discharge.  While in the military, Lloyd married Phyllis L. Scott (nee Ridgway) at the Fifth Street Chapel, Ft. Ord, California on October 23, 1948. From this loving union, two children were born, Sandra Lee Scott and James Lloyd Scott, III.

After briefly residing in New York, where he worked in a hospital, Lloyd and Phyllis settled back in Palmyra to raise their family.  Lloyd spent over 40 years with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, retiring in 1992.  In addition to greeting travelers at Exit 4 on the turnpike, he also worked as Clothing Presser at the family tailoring business for many years.

Lloyd was a Man of God, and worshipped faithfully at St. Paul U.A.M.E Church of Palmyra, NJ.  He was a member of the Senior and Men’s Choir, a member of the Building Committee, and served dutifully as President of the Trustee Board.  Along with his wife and fellow church members, he also spearheaded many fundraising events.

In his spare time, Lloyd enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, participating in the local bowling league, tending to his yard, watching baseball, and coin collecting. He also enjoyed shopping, and had a reputation for being the sharpest-dressed man around town.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents and devoted wife of 64 years, Phyllis L. Scott. He leaves to cherish fond and loving memories, two beloved children, Sandra L. Scott-Shah of Palmyra and James L. Scott, III, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two grandchildren, DeAndre' of Cinnaminson and Isabella of Virginia Beach, Virginia; three sisters, Yvonne Burroughs of Palmyra, Geraldine Baynard of Camden, and Jamie Scott of Pennsauken; one brother, Theodore R. Scott, Sr. (Thelma) of Palmyra; four aunts, Ola Mae Boone, Connie Christian, Rebecca Cooper, and Theola Martin; cousin, Clayton Long, Sr. of Burlington; and Goddaughter, Lori (Scott) Noel of Williamstown.
