Obituary of Joseph Irvin Newby

Joseph "Joe Doc" Irvin Newby, 77, of Pleasantville, New Jersey, succumbed to lung cancer at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. 

Joseph was born December 21, 1939 in Edenton, North Carolina to Bennie and Pernel Newby.  He graduated from D. F. Walker High School in Edenton in 1957.  On November 30, 1957, he married Annie Mae Overton.

Joseph retired from Stockton State College (now Stockton University) in Pomona, New Jersey, as a custodial supervisor in 2002.

Joe enjoyed serving the Lord.  He was a member and deacon at the Second Baptist Church in Atlantic City for over 30 years.  In his spare time, he enjoyed horse racing, playing cards, and watching TV (especially I Love Lucy and Eagles Football).

Joseph is survived by his wife of 59 years, Annie Mae Newby; sons, Joseph (Janida) Newby and Edwin (Ella) Newby; daughters, Lora Bunch, Brenda J. Perry, Joanne Newby and Denise L. (Derrick) Bradley; his brothers, Jessie Littlejohn of Ohio, and John Sykes of Trenton, New Jersey; his sisters, Anne Sykes and Bertha Sykes, both of Trenton, New Jersey; two sisters-in-law, Isadora Brown and Jessie (Jackie) Copeland; a brother-in-law, Isaiah (Irene) Overton; two Godchildren, Stephanie (Kevin) Peterson of Pedricktown, New Jersey, and Linda (Bryant) Chambers of Mays Landing, New Jersey; 20 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren;  and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family especially thanks Holy Redeemer Hospice, Ms. Shirley Boyd and Ms. Carolyn Lilly for their loving care and support.
