Obituary of William J. Claiborne

William J. Claiborne was born September 6, 1934, in South Boston, Virginia, to Carter and Elizabeth (Faulkner) Claiborne. He departed this life peacefully on Sunday, July 12, 2015, at his home in Atlantic City.
Raised in South Boston, Willie was educated in the local school system. He was a graduate of Halifax County Training School. He enlisted in the United States Army and served from October 15, 1954 until October 14, 1957, receiving his honorable discharge from active duty.
After leaving military service, Willie relocated to Atlantic City and would make this his home for nearly fifty eight years. He was employed by Lou’s Restaurant in Ventnor, New Jersey, for many years. He then worked for Andy’s Restaurant, and lastly, at Trump Plaza Hotel Casino as a cook, from where he retired after many years of dedicated service. Willie joined Second Baptist Church in Atlantic City and attended regularly for many years.
Willie was previously a member of Prince Hall Lodge No. 27, in Atlantic City. He was an avid fisherman and gardener.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four sisters; Connie Claiborne, Pattie Younger, Irene C. Peters and Dorothy Braithwaite.
He leaves to cherish fond memories: his beloved companion, Kathryn Jones of Atlantic City; his brothers, Carter Claiborne, Jr., and his wife, Christine, of Rego Park, New York, and William Bryant Claiborne and his wife, Harriet, of South Boston; his sister, Lula Olds of Danville, Virginia; his stepchildren, SSgt. Raymond M. Jones and wife, Michelle, serving with the US Army in Germany, and Barbara M. Jones of Pleasantville, New Jersey; two step grandchildren, Quyan Jones and Bryttany Ware, both of Pleasantville; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
