Obituary of Elijah Lowe

I was born in Upatoi, Georgia; located in the eastern panhandle of Muscogee County, Georgia, on March 27, 1926. It was here I was born to Jessie Lowe and Samantha Culpepper-Lowe. I was the youngest of eight children; Shug, Willie, Emma, Jessie, William Silas and Mary. My daddy Jessie was a preacher who had a favorite spot in the woods where he would pray under a certain tree. I followed daddy one day and listened to what he was saying. He would be talking but I didn't see nobody...then I ran fast back home. He didn't know I was there. One day daddy took me asides and he told me that he was going away and not coming back. Take care of your momma and be a good boy. The next day, daddy told momma he was going to pray (his usual custom like he always did). So I waited, then I followed him. He went to that old tree in the woods, knelt down and started to pray. "Lord, I'm ready to go home, so I'm gonna wait for you to come and get me." So daddy laid down under that tree and went to sleep. I was so scared and ran home. I told momma I saw daddy talking to someone in the woods but I didn't see nobody. Then he laid down under that tree and went to sleep. Later, some colored deacons on a wagon and mule daddy knew, came by the house and said the found daddy's body. Momma came out the house , looked at him and said, "Yep, that's my husband." We gonna give him a decent burial. They borrowed a shovel and dug a hole in the ground, not to far from the house and placed daddy in it and placed a grave marker made of wood in it. I took care of momma by doing odd jobs to earn money. I was tall young and looked older. So I joined the Army. My mother signed for me cause I was too young, So, they let me in. I did basic training at Fort Benning, Home of the Infantry and later Paratrooping and Rangers. Since I was good at taking care of chickens, they put me in charge of them. The chickens had stopped laying eggs. The Army had to buy eggs off post. I noticed at night the chickens would get cold. I put electrical wiring and light bulbs in each coupe and turned the lights on at night. The chickens started laying eggs like crazy. I was promoted to Cpl (Corporal). One night I went into town dressed up in my Army uniform. I met a young lady, she was pretty and I asked her to go with me. I met her parents and told them I wanted to marry her. She said yes! I married Mammie Evans and we had seven children, (two deceased), James, Angela, George, Carolyn, Desaree and step-son Lyndon. When Mammie died, I raised four foster boys, Hasan, Farouk, Admire, and Mustafa. I later married Moselle Coleman who passed away in June 2013. Reverend Elijah Lowe was a man of many talents: - Choir Director at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Columbus, Georgia - Deacons at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Columbus, Georgia - Sunday School Superintendent at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church,Columbus, Georgia - Tire Buster at Montgomery Ward, Columbus, Georgia _ Construction Worker in Newark,NJ/Cerami Construction, Paramus, NJ _ Pastor at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Malaga, NJ Reverted Elijah Lowe loved God, his family and all God's people. He is survived by his children, Minister James Lowe, Angels Lowe-Mack, Carolyn Lowe, Desaree Lowe and step-son , Lyndon Lowe; grandchildren, Quarelle, Christopher, Ebony, Elliott Mack, Damian, Emmanuel, Patrick and a host of great grands, nieces, nephews other family and friends to numerous to mention.
