Obituary of Gerald Norwood Pointer
Gerald Norwood Pointer Sr., affectionately known as “Bubbles,” was born on February 6, 1937, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Allen B. and Marian Pointer. A legendary figure to those who knew him, Gerald was the definition of a “fly guy” with a heart as big as his personality. Known for his quick wit and his effortless charm, Gerald had a way of lighting up every room with his presence effortlessly.
Though he built a career as an industrial sandblast technician, Gerald’s true passions lay elsewhere—in boxing, reading science, music, and keeping up with the current events. A rare, self-taught musician, Gerald had the remarkable talent of being able to play nearly every instrument by ear. Yet, despite his incredible talent, he only shared these musical gifts with his immediate family. For them, he would bring out his saxophone or tinker on the piano, filling the house singing melodies that turned ordinary moments into cherished memories.
Together with his beloved wife, Ida Mae, Gerald made a warm and welcoming home in Berlin, NJ, where they raised their four children: Gerald Jr., Glenn, Geoffrey, and Tequa. As a devoted husband and father, he instilled in his family the importance of hard work, strong will, and philosophy. He had a special way of turning everyday moments into life lessons, often teaching loved ones the beauty of living simply while giving great advice.
Gerald was a true original—quick with a joke, wise beyond words, and full of life. He embraced simplicity and found joy in the little things, always reminding those around him to do the same. Known for his laughter and his ever-curious mind, he brought both fun and wisdom to every conversation.
To his family and friends, Gerald was much more than a husband, father, or friend; he was an inspiration, a mentor, and an absolute treasure. Although he reserved his gifts for those closest to him, his spirit leaves a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He often encouraged loved ones to believe in themselves, find joy in simplicity all with a blend of humor, intellect and lots of optimism. yGerald’s laughter, love, and legendary spirit will be deeply missed, yet his legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and loved ones forever. His life was a life lived with thoughtfulness wisdom, and love—fond memories that will keep “Uncle Bubbles” alive in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him.
