Joyce was always such a joy to work alongside. We worked together on and off over two decades, and she was always kind, helpful and knowledgeable, and most importantly, forthright and straightforward. We were friends as well as colleagues and even after I left our employer for almost ten years, coming back our relationship just picked up right where it left off.
Joyce was a gem of a person and I will miss her very much. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

My most distinct memory of Joyce is her smile. It radiated light, warmth, and life itself. It spoke to a sense of joy within her spirit that I always felt whenever in her presence. Her kind one does not always meet on earth. And in saying that it is not hyperbole. Joyce was a gentle and warm spirit who you didn’t necessarily “hear” when you encountered her but whose presence you most certainly felt. The world lost a saint yet God reclaimed an angel. May you rest in peace. And may God cover, bless, and keep your beloved daughter, Aliyah, and loyal helpmate, Herb, in His perfect peace. And may He do the same for all touched by her loss.

It was a joy to be in Joyce’s company. She had a warm and welcoming way about her during the best of times and so much strength and courage through the most challenging and most difficult times. Having spent time with Joyce, Herb, Aliyah and extended family over many Thanksgiving dinners, the joy in her was so clear to see as she hosted family and provided a warm gathering atmosphere for all. When talking with Joyce, I always knew what was important to her in how she expressed appreciation, love and pride for her family and friends, and how she was committed to wanting and doing the best for all, be it family, work responsibilities, and others she encountered. It was not the words alone but the feeling and energy conveyed in how she spoke about things. Dan and I so enjoyed the company of Joyce and Herb on a few occasions when we traveled together. I felt great joy and was so honored to be her Maid of Honor when she and Herb married.
Joyce, our cousin, was so dear to us. We are blessed to have had her in our lives. She will always be with us in our hearts and minds.

I first met Joyce when she and my daughter Nicole Harmon became college friends. Joyce was a lovely, vibrant caring person. I was impressed with her character as she commuted often and became a dedicated caregiver for her dad, despite her hectic schedule.
When Joyce was diagnosed with that devastating disease, my heart broke and I wondered what to do to comfort her in some small way. Thus, I began sending monthly thinking of you and encouragement cards. Later, I sent texts, as well. One of the messages was, "keep going through the storm, your rainbow is waiting on the other side."
Rest in peace dear heart.
Love,
Geraldine Waters

Joyce loved children. Darnice's grandchildren, Taylor and Tori huddled next to Joyce as she showed them how to type to activate a voice to express herself.
Also Joyce and the grandchildren sang and danced to the sound of a song they knew.

I first met Joyce in fall 1989, shortly after I transferred to Temple University. We were taking a human resources class together and quickly became friends. Our friendship continued throughout the remainder of our college years, and then graduated into our work careers. As life took our paths onto different trajectories, with Joyce moving to New Jersey, and I moving to the Philadelphia suburbs, we vowed to each other that we would remain best friends. And we did! Joyce epitomized all of the qualities and characteristics of a true friend. I am eternally grateful to have been blessed with one true friend, my BFF Joyce.

Q: How did you meet Joyce?
A: Joyce and I were close friends for over 20+ years. I will never forget the day she and I met, we gravitated towards one another in the parking lot of our daughter’s day care center. It did not take us long to become fast friends, she and I could talk for hours about anything. Joyce kindness, warm heart, and infectious laughter had a way of brightening every room she walked into. Joyce had such a bright spirit, that I know will live on in the memories we all carry. Herb and Aliyah, know I am here for you in whatever way you need. Sending you all my love and strength.

I had the opportunity to work with Joyce at Bank of America for the last seven years and can say, without a doubt that she was one of the most wonderful people I've had a chance to connect with. She was always friendly and went out of her way to be helpful, both to clients and colleagues. Her sunny disposition made what could seem like mundane work enjoyable. My deepest condolences for your family's loss. Please know that Joyce's work friends are thinking of you and holding you close in our hearts. Along with you, we will treasure Joyce's memory and are thankful to have had the privilege of knowing her.

To many, Joyce was my sister-in-law, but to me she was far more than that. Joyce was my sister - the sister I never had. She was always there, willing to listen, to give advice, and most of all, to simply give of herself, her kindness, and her selflessness.
Perhaps the most powerful example of this is how Joyce treated my daughter, Beti, her niece. I adopted Beti when she was ten from a remote village in Southern Ethiopia. The very day we landed in America, Joyce greeted us with bags of clothes, dolls, all kinds of toys, and a box of cake mix so Aliyah and Beti could make their first cake or brownies together. And then there were the holidays. It was as if Joyce wanted to make up for all the traditional celebrations Beti had missed in the first ten years of her life - Thanksgiving with all the trimmings, Christmas - where she would wait for Beti to arrive to decorate the tree. Even Easter was special, with its traditional egg hunt. And let's not forget the Dominican hair salons, which Beti adored.
There are two other things I must say about Joyce. First, she gave my dear brother, Herbert, 37 great years. Most of us would be happy if we only had one or two of such years. For that, I would like to thank Joyce, and I know that she appreciated the 37 years he gave to her... I know because she told me that - many, many times. They were perfect together, and remarkably, Joyce brought me and my brother closer than we had ever been - it takes someone very special and unique to do that, but that was Joyce. She made our entire family closer.
And one last story that I believe says all that you need to know about Joyce: When Beti found out that she was moving to the East Coast for college, Joyce was already in the most advanced stages of ALS. The first thing she said to Beti was, "I am so sorry that I have this ALS thing, because if I didn't, I would have come up there to see you." And I have no doubt that on move-in day, Joyce would have been there, helping us carry the heavy boxes, set up the room, and do all the wonderful things that parents do to give their kids a great start as they enter this exciting new phase. Even then, at her most painful or very well near that stage, Joyce was not thinking of herself... she was, as always, thinking first and foremost of those around her, and how she could support them.
I love you Joyce, and I already miss your sweetness, your quiet strength, and your unconditional love. I miss the way you made the world - our world - a better place just by being you. You were an angel on Earth, and now you're an angel somewhere else. You will always be an angel - our angel. I will carry your beautiful smile with me forever, especially when I reach out to text or call you... that incandescent smile will get me through whatever comes my way.
Rest in that peace that you so richly deserve.
Will look after Herb and Aliyah.
Love,
Monique

Joyce was my cousin my favorite cousin, the best role model, a beautiful genuine soul with the most beautiful unforgettable smile that lit up a room. She made my childhood fun.. I got to experience nice things because of her.. if it wasn't for her I wouldn't have. She didn't have to but, she did it because that's just who she was. Selfless and loving. She didn't have a child at the time and could of spent her time doing anything she wanted but she spent almost every other weekend with me and my sisters. Taking us out, making birthdays and holidays special. I loved being a flower girl in her wedding. The last time I spoke with her she told me to not be upset because she is blessed she lived a good life and has the best husband who took care of her. I'll hold onto that and the many memories for comfort. I love you Joyce forever and you will never be forgotten. Herb and Aaliyah I'm sorry you have my prayers.

Our memory of Joyce - a beautiful soul, at ease with self and what she stood for. Many years have passed since we saw her but her presence has always been etched in our memories. Fighters fight, but it’s true champions who know when to concede both with acceptance & agreement of being in faith with one’s Creator. You remain special in our hearts & mind. Joyce’s time was well spent; not in quantity but with quality. Now you’re Alive in perfection; in everlasting peace & joy! No more pain, no more tears. You will be missed. Will keep eye on Herbert & Aliyah. 1 LOVE
