Obituary of Marjorie Adams Thomas

Marjorie was born in Manhattan, NY to Mabel Yearwood Adams and Alfred Lewis Adams both immigrants from Barbados. Her parents became US citizens, met and married in NYC. She had two sisters, Alice and Emma who died two weeks apart at ages five and six before Marjorie was born. Marjorie mostly grew up in the Bronx. Marjorie’s family briefly owned a home in Brooklyn but moved back to the Bronx after crosses were burned on their lawn. Marjorie graduated from Walton High School in NYC. She then went on to become the first in her family to graduate from college. Marjorie graduated from Hunter College in NYC in December 1950 with a degree in Education. Marjorie married Maceo A. Thomas, Jr. in St. Phillips and James Church, Bronx, NY on December 23, 1950. They were married for 67 years until his death in May 2018. They had two daughters, May and Katherine. Marjorie instilled in them the importance of a good education and financial independence. Marjorie and Maceo lived in Mt. Vernon, NY and then Bronx, NY until retirement. They then moved to Sicklerville, NJ to be near their daughters and families. Marjorie taught and retired from Parker School aka Nathan Hale in Mt. Vernon, NY. She taught 2nd grade for over 25 years and through her career she played the piano for their auditorium programs. During this time, she also assisted Maceo with his funeral business. Marjorie And Maceo spent over 25 years in retirement in South Jersey. Marjorie was a founding member of the social club the Ins and Outs, made up of close women friends and their spouses. It has existed for over 60 years. She served as President of the Metropolitan Chapter of Jack and Jill for 2 years. She was a member of the Harlem Chapter of the Wives of the Knights of Columbus. Marjorie was a fan of the opera and frequented the Metropolitan Opera at the Lincoln Center in NYC. She was an avid lover of coffee and a baker of delicious pies. Marjorie learned and spoke Spanish. She was also a poet and wrote many poems for a variety of occasions and people. Marjorie was an avid traveler. Her parents retired to and lived in Mexico for many years before moving back to Barbados. She fell in love with Mexico and traveled it extensively. She and Maceo vacationed in Cancun twice a year for many years after their retirement. She also traveled to Europe, China, Canada, the Caribbean including her family islands of Barbados and St. Lucia, multiple parts of the USA, cruised to Bermuda, and for their 50th anniversary cruised South America and through the Panama Canal. Marjorie is survived by her daughters May A. Thomas, MD of Marlton, NJ and Katherine L. Thomas, DDS, married to Walter Streets of Sicklerville, NJ. Grandmother to Craig S. Carter, II married to Mai Tomura of Yokohama, Japan, Lori A. Carter married to Mason Kyle MacLeod of San Tan Valley, Arizona, Akeita M. Streets married to Andrew Rodriguez of NYC, New York and Kayla A. Streets of Boynton Beach, Florida. Great Grandmother to Adora Rayne MacLeod and Kaeden Dynast MacLeod, and Aunt and Great Aunt to many nieces and nephews.
