Obituary of Alberta Covington

Please share a memory of Alberta to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alberta Covington, the 8th of eleven children, was born to the late James P. and Marie Covington in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 8, 1934. Alberta, who was affectionately known as Bert, graduated from Lower Camden County Regional High School where she excelled in secretarial and business administration studies. Bert was a lifetime member of the New St. John C.M.E. Church in West Atco, New Jersey where her parents were founding members. In her personal Christian journey, Bert served as the church’s administrative secretary and youth choir director. Among her proudest accomplishments was mentoring young choir members and leading them during Sunday service. Watching them mature over the years and grow into responsible adults with families of their own was her greatest joy and brought much happiness to her heart. Bert loved to travel and was ever-ready to hop aboard the next cruise ship sailing to new places and new adventures. But wherever she was headed, whether going on vacation or going to the store, you could count on Bert to be well-dressed and looking her finest. Always! And if you needed some advice on what to wear or how to apply a little makeup, you could just ask Bert. Bert worked her whole life. She was an entrepreneur in the community and operated a general store on the corner of 9th and Titgen Avenue in the 80’s. For 30 years, she managed the Makeup and Fragrance department at Danny Mertz’s in the Berlin Auction where she applied her passion for helping women to always look their best. Her knowledge of perfumes and makeup was second to none. Prior to Danny Mertz’s, Bert had careers as a secretary and in accounting. She worked for the chemical manufacturer Rohm and Haas in Philadelphia as an Administrative Assistant for 20 years. She worked for the United States Internal Revenue Service in Philadelphia in the Accounting Department for 10 years. She also worked as a secretary for Atco Trailor. Everywhere Bert worked she was valued and respected as an employee and as a person. Having completed her mission assigned to her by God, Alberta Covington was called to eternal rest late in the evening of Sunday, March 20, 2022 at 11:05 pm. Although Alberta had no children of her own, she leaves to cherish her memory two (2) very special family members: Kathleen Covington (Robert Holmes; children Tanya and Jamie), and god-daughter Yevette Cuffee (Adonis; children Sharae and Adonai), two (2) sisters: Dorothy Beeks-Ellison (Gene) and Augustine Dickerson, two (2) sisters-in-law Anna Covington and Marie Covington, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Aunt Bert was our earthly angel. Anyone who knew her could not help but love her. She will never be forgotten. We love you Aunt Bert.
