Obituary of Betty Jean Lewis

BETTY J. LEWIS, age 64, of Atlantic City, New Jersey, departed this life on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at home with her family by her side. Life’s journey began for Betty on July 12, 1957 in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, born to the late Helen L. Lewis and the late Charles H. Lewis, Sr. Betty received her education in Atlantic City and graduated high school in 1975. She went on to attend college at Glassboro State College in Glassboro, New Jersey, where she received her associate degree. In 1981, Betty gave birth to her one and only daughter, Candace Lee Ford. They shared an unbreakable bond. Betty was employed by NAFEC in Pomona, New Jersey. She later went on to work for the City of Atlantic City in the Planning and Development office as Zoning Board Secretary. She retired from the City of Atlantic City after 31 years of dedicated service. Betty was a well-known pillar in her beloved community. Her community involvement includes: President of Westside Neighborhood Protective Association and President and Vice President of Atlantic City Chapter of NAACP. You could always find her volunteering her time and services to those in need. Upon retiring, she volunteered her days as the Volunteer Executive Director at Turning Point Day Center for the Homeless in Atlantic City. Every day that the doors of this facility were opened, you could find Ms. Betty at Turning Point. She worked with the at-risk community members to help them reestablish themselves as productive members of society. Betty was saved, holy ghost filled, and fire baptized! She was a faithful and dedicated member of Second Baptist Church in Atlantic City. Betty loooved her pastor. Betty was a sweet, loving, caring, and gentle soul. To know her was to love her. She lent herself wherever she was needed. Betty is predeceased by: her parents, Helen L. Lewis and Charles H. Lewis, Sr.; stepfather, Lee Palmer; brothers, Charles “Butch” Lewis, Jr., and Andrew “Andy” Lee Palmer; and sister, Karen Louise Lewis-White . She leaves to cherish her memory: her only daughter, Candace L. Ford of Atlantic City; the sunshine of her life, granddaughters, N’ayiana Tolbert and Ha’Leeya Ceaser of Atlantic City; loving sister, Anna M. Lewis of Atlantic City; beloved brothers, Elder Joseph W. Lewis, Sr. (Carolyn) of Galloway and Deacon Michael G. Palmer (Ericka) of Pleasantville; sister-cousins, Brenda Boyd (Van) of Junction City, Kansas, Nancy Williams of Washington, District of Columbia, Rachel Chapman (Kevin) of Chula Vista, California and Barbara Williams of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania; Special nieces/ daughters, Denise Lewis-Young of Deluth, Georgia and Leslie Lewis of Atlantic City; father of her child, Reese Ford of Pleasantville; Godson, Franco Sydnor (Kesha) of Egg Harbor Township; Goddaughters, Trishonda Williams of Atlantic City and Constance Cosby of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; bonus grandsons, Cinque “CJ” Oliver and Kahmir Cooper- Brown; bonus daughters, Erica Woody, Tyra Oliver, Aja Percy, Caroline Louis, Maria Brooks, Latisha Cooper and Tawane Corbin; close friends, Carmen McCall and Brenda Bediako of Atlantic City and Pastor Debbie Lewis of Galloway; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends, and the entire community of the great City of Atlantic City. Betty will be sorely missed.
