Obituary of Jerome W. Hurst

Please share a memory of Jerome to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On Saturday December 12, 2020, God took our beloved Jerome “Jerry” Hurst home to be with him where his loved ones were waiting. Jerome affectionately known as Jerry was born in July 21,1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Pennsylvania Hospital to the late Ada and William Hurst. He was the eighth of ten children. Jerry was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System. He attended and graduated from Edison High School. At an early age in 1972 Jerry was employed by Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). Jerry advanced at SEPTA from a Bus Driver to a Trolley Operator and finally as a Yardman. He absolutely loved interacting with his co-workers at the Fernrock Depot location. Over his decades of working there Jerry was always known for offering help and making people laugh along the way. I guess that is another reason why he was called “The Great One” and “Number 1”. Jerry was extremely happy and proud of his work life and accomplishments. He also contributed to his co-workers as one of the head union representatives for the FernRock Depot location. After 39 years of employment, Jerry retired on August 31, 2011. After retirement, he traveled the world with his wife and friends. He was also able to do what he loved most, fishing and helping others. He was the best dad that one could ever dream about having. Jerry was a blessing to his wife and family everyday of his life. Jerry was outgoing, easy going, and quick witted. He was super intelligent and whether you wanted to hear it or not he was always right! He will always be remembered for being one of the most reliable, on time and giving person you will know. He enjoyed watching and commentating sports of all kinds, automobiles, drag racing, fishing and most of all being a father to his only child and little girl. Jerry loved to eat good food and all types. He lived to eat. Jerry leaves to cherish his fond memory a devoted wife of 36 years Margaret Hurst, his only child Jeromita Hurst, a son in law Radames Santiago, a close friend who turned into a son, Kelvin Robinson, a dog-grandson, Sparta and a late dog-grandson, Deuce. Two brothers William and John Hurst, three sisters, Cynthia and Barbara Ann Anderson, and Gloria Hurst. He now rests with his late brothers Alexander Pritchett, Kenneth, Robert and Calvin Hurst. A host of loving nieces and nephews, in-laws, cousins, friends, and colleagues are left behind.
