Obituary of Mary M. Hunter

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mary Magdelene (Morris) Hunter was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. She was the last of ten children born to the late Lewis Mechanic and Clara Morris on May 16, 1933, in Charleston, South Carolina.

During her early years, Mary was educated in the Charleston city public school system. She worked in local hospitals as a Nurse’s Aide and later transitioned to providing care as a Home Health Aide. Mary also owned and operated a private day care within her home in Moorestown, NJ, where she cared for infants and older children who arrived daily for after-school care. On March 7, 1955, Mary was united in holy matrimony to Norman Louis Hunter. Their blessed family included four boys and two girls. Mary’s children were the joy of her life, and she ensured that she provided them with the support, caring, and lessons (values) that only a mother’s heart could give.

Mary had a wonderful sense of humor, and she loved to laugh. She loved cooking and genuinely loved people, especially her children and grandchildren. One of her frequent sayings was “If I can’t help you, I won’t hurt you.” Mary was known as a person who would literally give someone the clothes off her back. She was a member of Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church in Cinnaminson, NJ, where she faithfully served as treasurer, choir member, missionary, and in many other capacities as long as she was able to attend.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Hunter, nine siblings, and her son Rethaniel. She leaves to lovingly cherish her memory sons: William Maxwell, Jr (Kathy), Oran Maxwell, and Norman Hunter Jr. Daughters: Yvonne Gray (Franklin- deceased) and Gwendolyn Gibson (Tracy); Ten grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, daughter in law, Carol; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.

Mary was a beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin, and friend!
