Obituary of Lula Mae Mitchell
Lula Mae Davis Mitchell was born May 11, 1941 in Wilson North Carolina, the second of six children. She received her education at Darden High School and continued at Saint Augustine University in Raleigh North Carolina where she earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Education. While attending Saint Augustine University, she was inducted into Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated.
After graduating, Lula met Clarence E Mitchell and shortly thereafter they married, settling down in Fayetteville, North Carolina. As the wife of a Military man, Lula traveled the United States taking care of their daughter, until the family moved to Germany.
While in Germany, Lula taught English to the children on the military base. In 1974, Lula returned to the United States settling down in Rahway New Jersey with the hopes of employment with the Newark Board of Education. It was here in Newark that Lula began a long career teaching 1st grade at Dayton Street Elementary School until her retirement in June 1998.
In 1985, Lula met her long term companion, William "Bill" Coley. Together they spent their time traveling, cruising, visiting Atlantic City with her sister and brother-in- law - Margaret and Edward Taylor, as well as attending a multitude of Military functions as Bill was a retired Naval Officer.
Lula Mae Mitchell departed this life on December 8, 2025. She was preceded in death by her mother, Naomi Howard Davis and her father Connie Davis; her sisters Margaret Taylor, Norma Jean Barnes and Alma Ruth Davis; and her brothers Shirley Davis and Bobby Davis. She is survived by her daughter Djuna M. Coleman, 2 granddaughters, Tiana B. Coleman and Raynna L Coleman, 2 great granddaughters- Ahonesty Nichols and Zaelina Rodriguez. She leaves behind to cherish her memory brother-in-law Cleamon Barnes, sister-in-law Noveda Davis, a "special niece" Denise Williams as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
