Tristan Clarence Shorter was born on May 15, 1972, in Camden, New Jersey, to Margaret Joiner (née Shorter) and Tristan Venable. During his early years, Tristan lived in Camden before moving with his mother and sister to West Atco, New Jersey, in 1980. Tristan was affectionately called "Man" by his family. He attended Winslow Township School #1, then Edgewood Junior High School. He was a gifted student, but that did not stop him from being a class clown as well. He graduated from Edgewood Senior High School in 1990.
Tristan went on to study at Camden County College and began working as a Corrections Officer at the Camden County Jail. Later, he attended the Camden County Police Academy and fulfilled his childhood dream by serving as a patrolman for the Winslow Township Police Department in 1996. He excelled in his career, ultimately becoming the first Black Lieutenant at the department. Tristan was passionate about building relationships within the community through his police work and served for more than 25 years, retiring in 2023.
In 1998 and 2000, Tristan had two children, Jazzmyn and Jordyn, with Bathsheba Adams. In fatherhood, Tristan enjoyed going to matinees, driving ranges, soccer games, having silly string battles at the park, and playing vintage game consoles with his children. He made sure to let the world know how amazing his children are.
As a lifelong learner and humanitarian, he relished books, science, music, sports, and politics. Many can remember having debates with him about the world we live in. Among his many favorites were "Sanford and Son," "Star Trek," Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, the LA Lakers, and the San Francisco 49ers. He loved to eat and sleep, in true Taurean fashion. He will be remembered for his quick wit, charisma, and vibrant personality.
Tristan is survived by his daughter Jazzmyn Shorter, son Jordyn Shorter, mother Margaret Joiner, sister Tracie Shorter, and cousin Anisa Miller. Tristan rejoins his beloved aunt Geraldine Miller in the next life. He is mourned by extended family and many dear friends. He will be deeply missed.
Lovingly submitted by the Shorter Family.
