Sgt. Henry Bernard Heckstall (RET.), known to some as "Hammer"age 81, of Sicklerville, New Jersey, passed away in the early morning hours of August 25th after a long and courageous battle with illness. Born on June 15, 1944, in Windsor, North Carolina, Henry was the beloved son of Florence Lee Freeman and Eunice Brockers. Henry's life was defined by quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, and a deep love for family. After being educated in the Bertie County School system, he went on to serve with honor in the United States Army where he earned multiple commendations for his exceptional marksmanship and leadership, later he continued his service in the Army National Guard. He retired in 2006. His military service was a source of pride. Outside of uniform, Henry was a hardworking man who spent many years as a forklift driver at CertainTeed and American Galvanizing. He was known for his laid-back demeanor, quick wit, and the kind of presence that made everyone feel at ease. Whether playing cards, cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, or casting a line into the water, Henry found joy in life's simple pleasures. He was a devoted fan of Westerns and gospel music, especially the soul-stirring voice of Lee Williams, whose songs often echoed through his home. He loved to fish, hunt, and spend time with those he held dear. Henry leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience. He is mourned by his wife and devoted companion, Shirley Heckstall, who lovingly cared for him in his final months; his daughter, Nigel Williams; son-in-law, Noel; and stepdaughter, Yolanda Johnson. Grandchildren Kayla, Porsche, Tempestt, Stephen, Liam and great grand children Noelani, Sarai, Stephen and Kailee. He is reunited in rest with his parents, sister Lindell Bond and stepdaughter Shirley Johnson. He is also remembered by his brothers Curtis and Wendell Bond; sisters Mamie Bridgett (James Bridgett) and Lillian Swain. Nieces Rita Mebane (Jerry Mebane) and Sharon Lee (Thomas Lee). To know Henry was to know a man of quiet dignity, deep faith, and enduring love. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to share in his journey
