Obituary of Leroy T. Burroughs, Jr.
Leroy Theodore Burroughs Jr., affectionately known as “Bub” was born to Juanita Williams and the late Leroy Theodore Burroughs, Sr. on December 22, 1959 at Brewster Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
Leroy was educated in the Philadelphia, PA, and Haddon Heights, NJ public school System.
At an early age Leroy accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a member of New Salem Baptist Church in Philadelphia.
Leroy was the younger brother to LaRoyce, eventually becoming a big brother to Sherry and Terrie.
As kids, Leroy and his sister LaRoyce practiced Shotokan Karate together. Leroy earned a brown belt, which sparked his love for Kung Fu and Karate movies. He enjoyed playing sports, and getting into mischief, especially with his little sister Sherry.
Being the only boy, Leroy was able to spend a lot of one on one time with his father, who loved to go fishing when he wasn’t working. From the very first time they went deep sea fishing, they formed a life long love for being on the water together.
Leroy cherished that time with his father.
“I always say that my dad was the greatest man that I ever knew,” he shared recently. “He taught me everything from being a hard worker, being tough and standing up for yourself - not taking no stuff from anybody.”
Leroy was a true Momma’s boy at heart. He would light up when talking about her. “She always instilled in us that family is everything because in the end that’s really all that matters,” he said about Juanita. “My mom is 92 years old and she is still the best mom ever. I could go on forever talking about her.”
Growing up in West Philadelphia, Leroy became a diehard Eagles fan. His love for the Eagles was so contagious that years later his little sister Terrie became his partner in the Bird Gang. Leroy had the chance to see his beloved Eagles seal their ticket to return back to the Super Bowl this season.
Leroy followed in his dad‘s footsteps as a member of Laborers Local #332, and worked in construction for many years, becoming an expert craftsman. You name it, Leroy could build it. He began as a construction laborer in 1976, working for multiple employers, and in 1999 found a home with AP Construction Company as a laborer and then a project manager. Leroy worked on many large projects for AP, including the home of his Eagles, Lincoln Financial Field. He retired as a superintendent for AP in 2021.
Leroy and the love of his life, Janice Horne met in 1986. Leroy treasured Janice or “Baby” as he would refer to her. “I would have to say that my wife inspires me more than anything or anyone else,” Leroy said.
“She always supports me, pushes me to do things right. She’ll be my biggest cheerleader or my biggest critic. But it’s always for the good. She made me a better man.”
Leroy was a loving father to four children — Princess, Leroy III, Jenerra, and Jordan.
His fun-loving attitude and competitive nature was passed down to all his children.
The competitions began in the family room — a hub of laughter and fun during frequent game nights, and continued at the dinner table with trivia challenges and spirited rounds of Monopoly.
Leroy loved to play, but he also emphasized the importance of hard work, encouraging his children to always be the hardest workers in the room.
Above all, he taught them the value of unwavering support for your family, and always being present when they needed you most. Each of Leroy’s children were blessed with his sense of humor and charismatic ways — not to be overshadowed by a strong sense of style and fashion, which he nurtured from a young age.
Leroy was also an avid reader of newspapers and enjoyed putting puzzles together. He became a fan of whatever his family members participated in, whether that be local South Jersey Football, South Jersey Basketball or Olympic wrestling.
Leroy leaves behind a rich and loving legacy that will be honored by his devoted wife of 38 years, Janice; his mother, Juanita (Terry); his sisters, LaRoyce (Donald), Sherry (Merle) and Terrie (Paul); his children, Princess, Leroy III, Jenerra (Raven) and Jordan (Lauren); mother-in-law, Priscilla; in-laws, Carolyn, Jessica (Hassan), Lawrence (Kadijah), James Jr.; nine grandchildren, Semaj, Zion, Zakir, Aubrielle, Beacon, Ora, Rise, Banner and Badge; nieces, Mia (Alex), Sydney; nephews, Tyler (Kiara), Landon as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and close friends.
